Job Summary

The College Counselor is responsible for collaborating with the Director of College Guidance to ensure best practices and efficient operation of the academic guidance department of the middle and high schools.

Accountability

Reports to the Director of College Guidance.

FlSA Status

Exempt, Full-time

Qualifications/Skills

  • Must be a Christ-follower who upholds, in word and deed, the Hill Country Christian School of Austin’s Core Values and Statement of Faith.
  • Must faithfully attend a church whose fundamental beliefs are in agreement with the Statement of Faith of this school.
  • Some experience working within education is preferred but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Google applications and Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be capable of exercising good judgment in evaluating situations, managing priorities, and making decisions.
  • Must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to multitask with frequent interruptions. 
  • Must maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding the personal information of students and families.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to the Director of College Guidance, offering assistance for various projects, events, and initiatives as needed and requested
  • Oversees the high school internship program
  • Adjusts day-to-day priorities at the discretion of the Director of College Guidance, addressing any needs that arise related to Academic and College Guidance
  • Takes responsibility for gathering and documenting information related to various initiatives throughout the school year (CCU registration, test registration, senior information spreadsheet)
  • Utilizes database software (e.g., SCOIR) to support administrative tasks related to the college application process (e.g., college acceptance wall)
  • Shares financial aid and scholarship information on a timely basis with students and families
  • Offers assistance in the planning and execution of the annual College Fair, along with periodic Texas college visits over the school year
  • Coordinates and manages receptions for college admissions representatives on campus
  • Offers assistance in the planning, execution, and proctoring of the PSAT, SAT School Day, ACT, and AP exam administrations
  • Supports the Executive Team in the administration of the CLT in grades 6-10
  • Co-leads and facilitates grade-level presentations and guidance lessons for high school students
  • Provides academic support and counseling to middle and/or high school students to the extent possible in preparation for course registration
  • Assists with the Director of College Guidance, principals, and department chairs to update middle/high school course offerings and prerequisites before the publication of the course catalog and course registration for the following school year
  • Participates in course registration presentations for middle and high school students during the spring semester
  • Collaborates with the Director of College Guidance and department chairs to review (i.e., approve or decline) students’ course requests based on students’ satisfying prerequisites and available capacity, communicating updates to students as necessary
  • Supports the Director of College Guidance in the creation of the master schedule for the following school year based on course offerings, sections, and teaching assignments as determined by the middle and high school principals
  • Assists with processing additional schedule requests for middle and high school students within the designated add/drop period in the fall
  • Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of College Guidance (e.g., Tier II ARCC support, attendance at retreats and/or dances, etc.)
  • Applies and advocates the use of the Matthew 18 school policy for biblical conflict resolution

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position using repetitive arm, hand, and finger movements.
  • Able to operate a computer and a copy machine.
  • Ability to work in an active office setting with frequent student interactions and numerous interruptions.
  • Frequently communicates with students, parents, co-workers, and others. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations, whether in person, via email, or telephone.
  • Moves about inside campus buildings and outside on the grounds.
  • Possible exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.
  • Occasional lifting of 5 to 25 pounds
