Field Organizer

Based in Newark, NJ

$65,000 – $75,000 depending on experience - full time

This position reports to the Field Director and works directly with an organizing team and our base of early childhood workers in New Jersey.

NJ Communities United, in a decade long partnership with CWA Local 1037, has organized a base of childcare providers, early childhood workers, teachers and parents across the state of New Jersey fighting for an equitable and affordable childcare system. We organize to raise industry standards for the early childhood workforce and center the voices of people who do this work every day in political decision making. Our leaders and organizing team work to restructure the childcare system to become one that is inclusive and equitable for all. 

Primary Responsibilities:

• A commitment to social justice, the labor movement and grassroots organizing
• Build one-on-one relationships with workers and community members
• Make accurate leadership assessments
• Find and manage campaign information
• Build strong organizing committees
• Communicate campaign messages clearly both verbally and in writing
• Use strategic judgment and problem solving skills
• Organize and run community meetings and actions
• Work with a diverse team
• Work independently within a plan
• Work hard, commit to the mission and organizing model of NJCU and be willing to learn new skills

Primary Qualifications:

• A commitment to social and economic justice and grassroots organizing
• A comprehensive understanding of unions and the labor movement
• 3 to 5 years of labor and/or community organizing experience
• Leadership experience
• An ability to empathize and move others to action
• Ability to be a team player and work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment
• Strong work ethic and willingness to work evenings and weekends when projects demand it
• Ability to work with a large and diverse cross-section of members and allies
• A valid driver's license required
• Spanish speaker highly desired
